Teaching Tradition

Every herding culture in the world has bagpiping of some form. The Great Highland Bagpipe is steeped in tradition and is truly an ancient artform. Refined to the modern world of today, it is the most developed form of bagpiping in the world. Teaching and instruction is a huge part of what Griffin does. Maintaining a respect and delivery of all the tradition involved with highland piping, Griffin uses contemporary techniques in the instruction of the art. Constant reevaluation of technique, attention to the presentation of the instrument, and maintaining a focus for the student's goals are key focal points in his teaching style. Griffin provides quality instruction on an individual basis and in a group setting.

Testimonials

"Griffin Hall has been my bagpipe teacher and friend for nearly 7 1/2 years, and I consider it a privilege to be both student and friend. He is exacting but oh, so kind in bringing along a rank (and elderly) beginner and patiently educing the best one can be at any given moment. It’s a journey, and I have the best travel guide." Maura W.

"Griffin has been a great teacher for Orin through the past 7 years. Orin started playing bagpipes when he was 9 years old, and Griffin is just a few years older than Orin. Griffin has always treated Orin like a younger brother, and they've enjoyed a close relationship. Orin learned fast with Griffins careful tutelage and instruction. Griffin has always been a great role model for Orin, and I hope they continue their friendship for many years to come." Candy W

"Learning to play the bagpipes has been a dream of mine, and with Griffin’s expert guidance, it has become a reality.  In 3 years Griffin has taken me from knowing nothing of the bagpipes, to winning medals in solo contests. Griffin’s passion for the bagpipes is infectious, and his dedication to teaching is truly commendable. His patience and encouragement have been instrumental in my progress, and I've come to admire his deep knowledge of this unique instrument. Griffin has a remarkable ability to break down complex techniques into manageable steps, making the learning process both fun and rewarding. Thanks to Griffin’s guidance, I've not only improved my bagpipe skills but also gained a deeper appreciation for the rich history and tradition of this instrument. I feel privileged to have him as my tutor, and I can confidently say that he is one of the best bagpipe teachers out there. I wholeheartedly recommend Griffin’s services to anyone eager to embark on this musical journey. Griffin’s expertise, enthusiasm, and unwavering support make him an exceptional teacher who has had a profound impact on my life. Thank you for helping me achieve my bagpiping dreams!" Zach G.

"The minute I stepped in to the practice room with Griffin, I knew immediately that he was serious and passionate about not only playing the instrument, but also teaching others to do so. I am fortunate enough to be able to attend lessons with him in person, not only at his location, but also with Kansas City St. Andrews Pipes and Drums where he is the Pipe Sergeant. After receiving instruction from him twice a week for the past year and half now, I would have no reservations about doing so in an online setting. I have no doubts that it would be the exact same as sitting face to face, practice chanters in hand. His style of teaching is relaxed, but serious. If you don’t get it right, he will work with you over and over until you do and he’ll do it without any pressure. I have asked him to make videos for me when I’m not getting something, and he does.  He knows it is different for everyone. Some get things quick and some of us not so quick; but he’ll work with you, guide you, explain to you the how’s and why’s of doing it “this way” until you get it. Then he’ll move you on to something a little more detailed and difficult. That will continue right up to the day that he tells you, “Okay, we need to talk about getting you some pipes.” From there it gets better. If you’re considering lessons in person or online, do it. The day I went to my first lesson a guy that was leaving asked me if I was there for pipes. When I told him I was he said, “You’ve got the best.” He wasn’t kidding."  Rydel V.

"Your teacher, your guide, is so important. Fortunately my research led me to Griffin. Griffin's first love is playing the bagpipes. His second is teaching. The guy doesn't teach to make a living (He has a day job.) He teaches because he loves building new pipers. Griffin is beyond as a piper, and that trait, I find, tugs you toward excellence. You get to and exceed playing skills that are a fun surprise. Griffin has taken my bagpipe journey beyond my expectations." Mark C.

"I became quite tired of being another old bagpipe hack and was in a motivational slump and thought that finding some quality instruction would jar me out of my rutt. Quality piping teachers are hard to find in my neck-o-the woods. I contacted  Griffin, and he agreed to take me on as a student online. Twas the best decision ever! He is very talented and oh so patient with a hard headed student such as myself. His teaching style is very laid back, but don't let that fool you. NOTHING SLIPS PAST HIM. On top of all that, he's a genuinely nice guy and very pleasant to work with. Lessons with him are almost a social event for me on top of being very productive! As results of my lessons with him, my playing has most noticeably improved." Derryl D.
